The Native American Spiritual Journey

Native Americans had much love and wisdom for mother earth and a spiritual way of life. They shared a common belief the earth is a spiritual presences that must be honored, not mastered. Unfortunately, western Europeans had different idea. To them the Americas was a beautiful but savage land to use as they saw fit.
Unlike many traditions, the spiritual wisdom of the native American is not found in a set of scriptural materials, but was part of the fabric of daily life and experience. I find it amazing how these 20 concepts the Native Americans left for us to live by is the same messages other great teachers, sacred texts and religions.

The Native American Code of Ethics

  1. Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often. The Great Spirit will listen, if you only speak.
  1. Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path. Ignorance, conceit, anger, jealousy and greed stem from a lost soul. Pray that they will find guidance.
  1. Search for yourself, by yourself. Do not allow others to make your path for you. It is your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.
  1. Treat the guests in your home with much consideration. Serve them the best food, give them the best bed and treat them with respect and honor.
  1. Do not take what is not yours whether from a person, a community, the wilderness or from a culture. It was not earned nor given. It is not yours.
  1. Respect all things that are placed upon this earth – whether it be people or plant.
  1. Honor other people’s thoughts, wishes and words. Never interrupt another or mock or rudely mimic them. Allow each person the right to personal expression.
  1. Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.
  1. All persons make mistakes. And all mistakes can be forgiven.
  1. Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind, body and spirit. Practice optimism.
  1. Nature is not FOR us, it is a PART of us. Animals, plants and other living creatures are all part of your worldly family.
  1. Children are the seeds of our future. Plant love in their hearts and water them with wisdom and life’s lessons. When they are grown, give them space to grow.
  1. Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of your pain will return to you.
  1. Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the test of one’s will within this universe.
  1. Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental self, Spiritual self, Emotional self, and Physical self need to be strong, pure and healthy. Work out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails.
  1. Make conscious decisions as to who you will be and how you will react. Be responsible for your own actions.
  1. Respect the privacy and personal space of others. Do not touch the personal property of others – especially sacred and religious objects. This is forbidden.
  1. Be true to yourself first. You cannot nurture and help others if you cannot nurture and help yourself first.
  1. Respect others religious beliefs. Do not force your belief on others.
  1. Share your good fortune with others. Participate in charity.

We may differ in our faith, religion, and culture, yet we all live together on the same mother Earth.  We are only custodians and not owners of mother Earth, not its conquerors nor its destroyers.  Be true to yourself by being true to nature. We are one.

Chief Seattle said, “All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth.”

Ana Daksina – A poet is the strangest sort of soul You in this life may e'er expect to meet More broken even while more truly whole, Innocently intending well, more sweet Than any but a five year old should be Unfit to meet a callused world's demand Or to behave aught expediently — All grace in flight; an albatross on land Do not the all too common error make Do not fall into the too easy trap Avoid the fatal egoic mistake Imagining that poet be a sap Powerful spirits, classic and antique, Give voice when poets ope their mouths to speak

    1. elquanah – United States – We are all on a lifelong quest seeking the meaning of life, to find happiness and understanding of the world we live and the afterlife. I grew up in a small rural Christian community in the Midwest US, served in the US Marine Corp, and worked the corporate world. I realized life had much more to offer than titles and labels of the material world. Since 2010, I have been studying wisdom teachings of world religions and philosophies, belief systems, energy, meditation, science, metaphysics, extraterrestrial, and the esoteric teachings of Jesus, Buddha and many others. In 2016 became an avid student of the Law of One. It provided an understanding of the world we live today, our universe and most importantly, the Infinite Intelligence we call God. I am simple student of life, a Mystic seeking the truth, sharing knowledge that may assist anyone on their life Journey.
