3I/ATLAS (often informally called “31 Atlas” or “31/ATLAS” online) is the third confirmed interstellar comet ever detected passing through our solar system. It originated from outside our solar system (likely another star system billions of years ago) and is on a hyperbolic trajectory — meaning it will zip through and never return.
Why the Buzz and Rumors?
• Early observations showed unusual behavior (delayed cometary activity, brightness changes, some spectral oddities) → Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb and others speculated it could be artificial (alien tech/probe).
• Conspiracy theories exploded online (Joe Rogan discussions, fake “Elon Musk confirms alien ship” articles, etc.).

• NASA and ESA held press conferences (most recently Nov 19, 2025) explicitly debunking alien claims — it’s a natural comet.
• Recent Hubble, JWST, Mars orbiters, and ground telescopes confirm classic cometary features: coma, tail, jets, OH radicals, water/CO₂ sublimation.
In short: A super-rare natural visitor giving scientists a unique peek at chemistry from another star system — exciting for astronomy, but definitely not aliens or anything dangerous.
If you’re trying to spot it, you’ll need at least a moderate telescope and dark skies right now — it’s fading as it leaves. Apps like Stellarium or SkySafari can point you to its current position in the constellation of Sextans (predawn eastern sky). Closest to earth on 19 December.
