When Jesus said, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’?” in John 10:34, he was quoting Psalm 82:6 and making a profound point about the divine origin and responsibility of human beings. In the immediate context, he was answering those who accused him of blasphemy for calling himself the Son of God. His argument was that if scripture could use the word “gods” for human judges or rulers who received divine authority, then it was not unreasonable for him—who was uniquely sent and sanctified by the Father—to speak of his divine sonship. On a deeper spiritual level, many mystics see this as revealing that humans carry a spark of the Divine, made in the image of God, with the potential to awaken to higher truth. It does not mean the human ego is the Supreme God, but that the soul has a sacred origin and a destiny connected to divine consciousness. In esoteric terms, Jesus was pointing beyond literal status toward the hidden truth that the divine life is present within humanity, though most do not yet fully realize it.
