The Ethiopian Bible says Heaven is Not what the Church Teaches

In the Ethiopian vision, heaven is not a distant place above the world but a sacred reality woven into everyday life. This belief is reflected in Lalibela, where churches were carved downward into living rock rather than built upward, symbolizing the discovery of God’s presence within creation rather than escape from it. Ethiopia’s spiritual imagination emerged from the blending of ancient Judaic traditions, African spirituality, and early Christianity, creating a faith that sees heaven and earth as deeply intertwined. Communal life—shared work, worship, and survival in the highlands—also shaped this vision. As a result, salvation is understood not as an individual achievement but as a shared journey, and heaven is imagined not as isolated rewards or rigid hierarchies, but as a harmonious community of souls united in the presence of God.
