The Law of One, Session 27: The Infinite Potential Within Creation

A reflection on the February 21, 1981 session

What if understanding ourselves begins with remembering that we belong to something infinite? In Session 27, Don Elkins turns the conversation toward the foundations of creation. His purpose is practical as well as philosophical: to understand our place in existence so that we can participate more consciously in spiritual growth.

Ra’s response begins with unity. Before the many forms, experiences, and apparent divisions of life, there is the One. The session explores how that unity relates to intelligent infinity, intelligent energy, free will, Love, and light.

These are teachings within Ra’s spiritual cosmology. Their invitation is to contemplate existence and our participation in it.

A beginning in healing and service

The session opens with questions about Paul Shockley and reported past-life connections to Atlantis and Egypt. Ra describes these experiences in terms of healing, teaching, and preparing a people to receive the Law of One. Ra also attributes reports of partially visible pyramid builders to temporary manifestations of its social memory complex.

Within the account, the emphasis falls on service and the preparation of consciousness. The conversation then moves beyond particular histories toward the nature of creation itself.

Words can point toward the mystery

Before defining intelligent infinity, Ra explains that language can only approximate conscious understanding. Separating “intelligent” from “infinity” risks breaking apart what is intended as one concept.

This is a useful reminder for spiritual study. A definition can guide our attention, but lived understanding grows through contemplation and experience. We can study love for years and still discover something new when we forgive someone, receive unexpected kindness, or sit quietly with another person’s pain.

The words matter. So does the openness we bring to them.

Intelligent infinity and intelligent energy

In 27.5, Ra describes intelligent infinity as the potential of unity and intelligent energy as the work that arises when that potential is tapped.

A helpful analogy is an unwritten melody and the music that becomes audible when it is played. The analogy is limited, but it suggests a relationship between possibility and expression. Intelligent infinity points toward limitless potential; intelligent energy describes its creative activity.

Ra adds a subtle qualification in 27.7: undistorted unity itself has no division between potential and activity. Those distinctions help explain creation from our perspective; they do not divide the One into separate substances.

For contemplation, this offers a profound possibility: the visible world expresses a depth of being that exceeds what we can see.

Creation as a great heartbeat

Ra describes reality through the image of a vast heartbeat: an outward movement into expression and an inward gathering toward unity. Individual centers of consciousness develop and eventually return toward their source.

This image invites us to hold individuality and belonging together. Our experiences have their particular character, yet they unfold within a greater wholeness.

In meditation, we might reflect on the smaller rhythms of our lives: acting and resting, speaking and listening, going outward into experience and returning inward to understand it. These are contemplative parallels to Ra’s image, rather than a literal explanation of its cosmic process.

Free will: the freedom to discover

Ra identifies free will as the first distortion, explaining it through the Creator’s knowing of Itself. Here, “distortion” means a particular expression or differentiation of unity; it does not necessarily mean a mistake.

Freedom allows different ways of experiencing and knowing. Our lives become places of discovery, with choices that carry consequences and opportunities for understanding.

Applied personally, this encourages responsibility without demanding that we already possess every answer. We can acknowledge a mistake, learn from its effects, and choose more thoughtfully. Respecting another person’s freedom also becomes part of loving them.

Love as the creative principle

The second distortion, Love, has a specific meaning in this session. Ra describes it as a powerful creative focus that draws upon intelligent infinity to form intelligent energy in particular ways.

Ra distinguishes this creative Love from the love or understanding associated with a stage of spiritual development. The same word serves related but different purposes.

This distinction expands the contemplation of love beyond affection. Within this teaching, Love helps explain why creation takes form at all. On the scale of daily life, we can ask how the direction of our attention shapes what we bring into being: a kinder conversation, a repaired relationship, a garden tended patiently, or help freely offered.

Those ordinary acts give us something tangible through which to explore the teaching.

Light and the variety of experience

The later questions explore Love’s relationship to light, photons, and the densities of experience. Ra describes Love as directing light into patterns through which the Creator can know Itself.

The discussion uses physical language, but it remains part of the session’s metaphysical account. When asked about a basic frequency of Love, Ra points toward unity and infinite strength rather than supplying a measurable frequency.

The sevenfold colors and densities are described as purposeful configurations of experience. In this framework, the diversity of creation provides ways of learning and knowing within the One.

Bringing the teaching into life

Session 27 asks us to consider that our individual lives participate in a much greater process of discovery. Free will gives us room to choose. Love gives us a creative direction. The experiences that follow give us opportunities to understand.

We do not need to solve the whole mystery before practicing its most accessible lesson. We can listen more carefully, act with greater kindness, and make space for quiet awareness. Each choice becomes an opportunity to express the unity we are learning to recognize.

The central message of Session 27 is that creation arises within unity, and our lives belong to that unfolding. Intelligent infinity points toward its limitless depth; intelligent energy toward its expression; free will toward the freedom of discovery; and Love toward its creative focus. To contemplate this teaching is to consider our lives with greater wonder—and to let that wonder become care for the world around us.
