Jesus (c. 4 BCE – 30/33 CE), the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama, c. 563–483 BCE), and Muhammad (c. 570–632 CE) are central founders or key figures used in three of the world’s major religions: Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam. Their teachings founded our understanding of the following:
1. Moral Transformation of the Human Being
All three focused on inner transformation, not mere ritual.
Jesus Christ: taught repentance (metanoia), purity of heart, humility, forgiveness
Gautama Buddha: taught liberation from ignorance and craving through awareness
Muhammad: taught submission of the ego (nafs) to God and moral discipline
Common thread: change the inner self → the outer world follows.
2. Compassion as a Central Virtue
Compassion is not optional in any of their teachings.
Jesus: love your neighbor, love even enemies
Buddha: karuṇā (compassion) for all sentient beings
Muhammad: mercy (rahmah) as a defining attribute of God
All three taught that spiritual maturity is measured by how one treats others.
3. Detachment from Ego and Excess
Each warned against domination by desire, pride, and material obsession.
Jesus: “You cannot serve God and money”
Buddha: desire is the root of suffering
Muhammad: warned against arrogance, greed, and injustice
Common message: mastery of the self precedes mastery of life.
4. Direct Relationship with the Divine / Ultimate Reality
They emphasized lived experience, not blind authority.
Jesus spoke of the Kingdom of God within
Buddha emphasized direct realization through insight
Muhammad emphasized personal accountability before God
While their metaphysics differ, each rejected hollow religiosity.
5. Ethical Action Over Empty Belief
None taught salvation through belief alone.
Jesus: “By their fruits you shall know them”
Buddha: conduct, meditation, and wisdom together
Muhammad: faith (iman) must be joined with righteous action
Right action mattered more than labels.
6. Challengers of the Status Quo
Each disrupted entrenched power systems:
Jesus challenged religious legalism Buddha challenged caste and ritual dominance Muhammad challenged tribal injustice and exploitation
All paid a price for speaking truth against corruption.
7. Universal Reach (Beyond Tribe or Nation)
Though rooted in specific cultures, their teachings transcended them.
Jesus addressed all humanity
Buddha taught liberation for all beings
Muhammad spoke of one God for all peoples
Each vision ultimately pointed toward human unity.
Jesus taught love through surrender to God, Buddha taught liberation through awakening, and Muhammad taught justice through submission to God—yet all sought to free humanity from ego, ignorance, and cruelty.
