Maricopa County Votes to Certify Election Results

PHOENIX, Ariz.—The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted to certify the November midterm general election results despite angry voters claiming the county mishandled the election—if not rigged it.

“It is what it is,” said District 5 board member Steve Gallardo, a Democrat, at the Nov. 28 public meeting in Phoenix.

“This election was safe, secure, and in my opinion, this election is over.”

More than 1.5 million county voters cast ballots, 290,000 on election day alone, a large percentage of them Republican.

However, an estimated 70 of the 223 county voting centers on election day reported printer malfunction that resulted in approximately 16,000 ballots that couldn’t go through the electronic tabulators.

The situation resulted in long lines of frustrated voters and election workers who instructed them to either spoil their ballots or vote in another location.

Or, they could place their ballots in a secure box for later tabulation.

County officials claimed an estimated 31 percent of the ballot printers didn’t work correctly on election day even though previous tests showed them functioning.

Resetting the printers resolved the problem, they said.

Several poll workers told The Epoch Times that the ballot rejection rate was as high as 52 percent in some locations and continued throughout the day and that some voters left without voting, amounting to “voter suppression.”

The five-member board’s vote on the canvass of the election included presentations by county Recorder Stephen Richer and Election Directors Scott Jarrett and Rey Valenzuela.

Their testimony hoped to put to rest any false claims and “misinformation” that the county mismanaged the election or that fraud was involved.

Voters who wished to speak were given 2 minutes at the podium, some arguing the board had no legal authority to limit their time to make comments.

Some more outspoken voters had to be escorted from the meeting.

Of the 35 speakers, many accused board members of preparing to certify what they considered a fraudulent election.

Others called for a delay in certification until the outcome of legal challenges from Republican candidates is known.

“This is pure corruption. This is outrageous. This is a national crisis. There is nothing trustworthy about this [public meeting]. It’s just theater—optics,” said David Clements of New Mexico.

Maricopa County includes Phoenix and about 60 percent of Arizona’s population.

On Nov. 27, the Maricopa County Elections Department stated that the county had followed state and federal laws to ensure every voter could cast their ballot.

The report was in response to a request from the office of Attorney General Mark Brnovich, which had asked for a detailed explanation following a “plethora of reports from election workers, poll watchers, voters,” and the county’s admission to widespread equipment malfunction.

Monday’s board meeting was largely self-congratulatory as board members thanked election officials profusely for doing a “spectacular” job running the election despite the myriad problems on election day.

“We have the most transparent election system across this country,” said District 2 Supervisor Thomas Galvin, a Republican.

Kari Lake Says She ‘Will Become Governor ’ After Attorney General’s Letter

By Jack Phillips
November 20, 2022 Updated: November 20, 2022

Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake proclaimed Saturday that she will become governor after the attorney general’s office demanded explanations on alleged Election Day problems in the state’s largest county.

“The way they run elections in Maricopa County is worse than in banana republics around this world,” Lake, a Republican rising star, told the Daily Mail.

Lake was responding to Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s office opening an inquiry (pdf) into polling issues in Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix and other cities, following ballot-tabulation issues that were confirmed by Maricopa County officials on Nov. 8. Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Wright demanded evidence turned over “on or before Maricopa County submits its official canvass to the Secretary of State.”

As of Sunday morning, Lake was trialing Democrat Secretary of State Katie Hobbs by about 18,000 votes. Last week, Hobbs declared victory in the race.

Lake, a former anchor for FOX10 in Phoenix, told the Mail that she believes “at the end of the day that this will be turned around and I don’t know what the solution will be but I still believe I will become governor, and we are going to restore honesty to our elections.”

On Nov. 17, Lake said she would be fighting in the state’s governor’s race after Hobbs declared victory.

“Now I’m busy here collecting evidence and data. Rest assured I have assembled the best and brightest legal team. And we are exploring every avenue to correct the many wrongs that have been done this past week,” she said. “I’m doing everything in my power to right these wrongs. My resolve to fight for you is higher than ever.”

Since then, Lake has posted videos from voters who say they experienced issues during Election Day.

On Saturday, Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Wright wrote to Maricopa County about printer problems on Election Day, which reportedly sparked confusion among voters. Maricopa County official Bill Gates and Recorder Stephen Richer on Nov. 8 told reporters that a printer issue was to blame and told voters to place their ballots in drop boxes.

“These complaints go beyond pure speculation, but include first-hand witness accounts that raise concerns regarding Maricopa’s lawful compliance with Arizona election law,” Wright wrote. “Furthermore, statements made by both Chairman Gates and Recorder Richer, along with information Maricopa County released through official modes of communication appear to confirm potential statutory violations of title 16.”

Hobbs declared victory earlier in the week after The Associated Press and other news outlets called the race for her.

A spokesperson for her office told local media last week that she is preparing a transition team. “Our job is to find the people who are, whether they’re democrat, independent, republican, that reflect Arizona. reflect the diversity of Arizona and can help deal with some of the challenges that the administration will face,” Mike Haener, the spokesman, said.

Before the midterm elections, Hobbs faced criticism from Lake and other Republicans for not recusing herself from handling the state’s election duties. Two former Arizona secretaries of state had told Time magazine that she should have stepped away from those duties.

But Hobbs, in several interviews, said that her decision was not out of the ordinary.

“Elected secretaries of state in Arizona have overseen elections where they’re on the ballot since statehood. This has never been an issue until now,” Hobbs told CNN several weeks ago.

Angry Maricopa Residents Respond

Blunt Election Comments From Angry Maricopa Residents During Board of Supervisors Meeting

Heated reactions come after thousands of votes set aside for later counting after glitches in ballot tabulation process
By Allan Stein
November 17, 2022 Updated: November 17, 2022

Republican voters frustrated with Maricopa County’s handling of the midterm election blasted the county’s board of supervisors on Nov. 16 and called for a new election.

“I’m just disgusted by your behavior and the decisions that you’ve made. Look at all these people out here suffering so badly because of your falsehoods,” said Sheila Roberts of Phoenix during the board’s public comment portion.

While Roberts said she was “pretty frustrated” by the ballot tabulation process on election day, she wanted “transparency and truth” and to “look every one of you in the eyes.

“Please, think about what you’re doing. Represent all of us and make sure all these votes count,” Roberts said.

Matt Baker of Phoenix began shouting at board members when it was his turn to speak.

“Once again, the eyes of the world are upon Maricopa County for another botched election,” he said.

“Am I here to accuse you of stealing the vote? Heavens no. That would make me a terrorist, wouldn’t it?” Baker said, and then asked, “What is more valuable, your vote or your money?”

County election officials estimate that 20 percent of ballot tabulating equipment experienced problems on election day in the county.

Those uncounted ballots, numbering in excess of 17,000, that didn’t get read went into a separate box for later counting at the Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center in Phoenix. An estimated 25,000 ballots remained uncounted as of Nov. 14, according to Arizona’s secretary of state office.

‘We’re not going to have any outbursts’

At least a dozen speakers, mostly Republican, voiced their frustrations about problems with the county’s electoral process at Nov. 16’s board meeting. Most comments reflected a level of mistrust for the county’s electoral system not seen since the 2020 presidential election.

“It is important that we hear the comments from the people who would like to speak today. So I have chosen to put this on the agenda,” said Board of Supervisors chairman Bill Gates just before the live YouTube feed quit working.

“Everybody is going to be treated the same. Everyone will have the same time” with two minutes to speak, said Gates, laying the ground rules.

“Part and parcel of everything I’ve been saying is we’re not going to have any outbursts. We’re not going to laugh. We’re not going to clap. We’re going to comment and move on to the next person.”

Calling the election in Maricopa County a “sham,” Robert Canterbury of Phoenix said the county has become the “laughing stock of the nation.”

Canterbury said Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs should have recused herself rather than overseen her election as Arizona’s next governor.

“How many disenfranchised voters in this election won’t vote in the 2024 election because they know that the same people in charge of the last two elections will be in charge of that election?”

“It’s horrible what happened,” said Barbara Jennings of Phoenix. “Nobody trusts [now]. We’re supposed to believe that we have free and fair elections here [and] that we have honest media. Both we do not.”

Michelle Dillard of Phoenix said, “We can’t accept these results. This is an illegitimate election.”

“It is your job to provide the remedy. We want a secure, fair election. Make that happen.”

Jeff Caldwell told the board that he believes that many voters didn’t get to vote on election day, calling the election a “complete disaster.”

“How many voters just said ‘screw it,’ and left?”
